OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Study Task 03: Book Cover Typographic Treatment

OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Study Task 03: Book Cover Typographic Treatment

Original Cover:

I created my initial designs based of the colour scheme of the existing book cover as I felt they worked well as it was structured and modernist due to the typeface helvetica being used which doesn't really age however I wanted to adapt it to communicate the concept/message of the book more effectively. I started by changing the typeface from helvetica to futura as the book is attempting to discuss the contemporary culture of graphic design along with the concept that parts of graphic design remains largely undiscovered and unstudied. I therefore made a link to the movement of discovery that could be fulfilled in the future by using a more updated futuristic font compared to helvetica and the serif font used.

My design shown above used different versions of the typeface Futura such as Futura Medium and Futura Condensed to create a visually stimulating contrast. I also added a box around graphic design in order for it to bring attention to the classification of the book placing this at the top of the page/hierarchy as I felt the classification was important however i made worlds the biggest as I felt this was the most important part of the title as the book focuses on this more specifically. I also drew a line under worlds instead of using a "/" as I felt this worked better than the symbol as it was more visually appealing. I replaced the letter O in worlds to a globe which was slightly modified to fit into the black background although still representative of the letter O.
