OUGD406 - Collaborative Practice - Branding & Identity

Tower Works Leeds
Today we were given study task 1

In your group you must brand Tower WorksLeeds. Consider the following:
  • Graphic design: The visual identity – hard corporate identity or soft, friendly caricature?
  • Tone of voice: Is the language you use (both spoken and written) formal or relaxed?
  • Dialogue: Can your users or customers contribute ideas and get involved in the organisation? Or is it a one-way communication?
You will need to assess the ket aspects of your company:
  • The mission statement/USP
  • Values
  • Vision
  • Personality
Define the key design ingredient, it could be Colour as in Orange (the mobile phone company), Environment/Architecture

We started by all designing a logo we thought worked best, after everyone designed one we all decided that mine worked
best however it did need some adjustments. I then went on to create the powerpoint to present and everyone else produced
the other important collateral.

Examples of edits on my original logo design. W to symbolise works and well as the towers together.

The inside of the building was inspiration for
our lime green colour scheme. Symbolises
fresh and innovativeness.

complex to use.

OUGD404 - Final Front and Back Cover

OUGD404 - Final Front and Back Cover

I added my logo designed for PPP to the front cover of my book to add the effect of me being the publisher.

I started by looking at various peaceful backgrounds. These included things like beaches and sunsets things and places which are commonly associated with peace and tranquility something I wanted people to associate quotes with.

I then added some white text onto the background and changed the opacity of the image so the text became more visible/legible. I initially named the book "Quotes that will change you life." However I later shortened this to "Famous life changing quotes." I debated on the idea of also changing it to "Live by the fame." or "Quote Me When I'm Gone." However, I didn't feel these worked as well as describing simply what the book was.

I decided to use the darker image of the sunset in the clouds as I felt it made the text "pop" more making it more legible.

This is the final design I chose.

OUGD406 - Leeds Library Book Cover

Leeds Library Book Cover Final Design

For the studio brief 02 I took my design from study task 03 and developed it further. I started by changing the background colour into a Neon green to represent the bright future for discovery of graphic design as well as representing the colour of the earth also linking to a sustainable contemporary culture.

I then changed the design all together by moving around the typography. I kept the globe inside the O however I added a box around the world/words to draw attention to the main title of the book as well as keeping the graphic design down the side of the box of the left hand side enabling the reader to see the classification of the book first.

I discounted the "/" as I felt it looked out of place and unprofessional due to feedback, however I added a hint of neon green in both the globe and the authors names making them both stand out also linking back to the colour of the earth and the link to a sustainable graphic design culture.
I created a wrap around cover and incorporated both a blurb and the publisher. I made the globe inside the O slightly bigger to emphasise the stamp that graphic design has on society. I wanted my design to be simplistic and structured like the original however slightly updated and futuristic.

OUGD404 - Studio Brief 02 - Page Spreads

OUGD404 - Studio Brief 04 - Page Spreads

So far I've created 3 page spreads on quotes by Marilyn Monroe all using the same typeface Futura Condensed. I chose this typeface as I felt it was most representative of Marilyn Monroe due to her being know for her bubbly and outgoing personality. I felt Futura condensed best represented this. The inspiration for these designs was taken from existing images on the internet.

OUGD404 - Studio Brief 02 - What is a book?

OUGD404 - Studio Brief 02 - What is a book?

Studio Brief 02 involves us producing a set of 10 double page spread layouts that explore the form, function and construction of a book.

I therefore brainstormed some possible ideas. I looked into ideologies about life itself. Such as a book full of inspirational life quotes with different typefaces and block colour backgrounds.

I then went on to think about a book that gave the reader 10 things to do before you die which couldn't be very content heavy but would just be a simple guide to living life to the full.

Then my final idea was a book about the dependency on technology that would try get people to actually live their lives and not miss opportunities and talk about how people coped without it in the past. Particularly focusing on the idea that social networks are actually becoming anti social.

I decided to use the inspirational life quotes idea due to the technology one being particularly time consuming due to having to come up with all the content myself however I altered the idea slightly via the crit we had. I was advised to do a book on quotes by famous people so it was a bit more specific.
I then decided that I would use a pamphlet stitch as the binding method and it would be A5. I sketched out what would be on each page and what would be involved.

I also looked at some ideas of what each page could look like.

I will screen print both the colours white and neon green onto a black stock A5 paper.

OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Study Task 03: Book Cover Typographic Treatment

OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Study Task 03: Book Cover Typographic Treatment

Original Cover:

I created my initial designs based of the colour scheme of the existing book cover as I felt they worked well as it was structured and modernist due to the typeface helvetica being used which doesn't really age however I wanted to adapt it to communicate the concept/message of the book more effectively. I started by changing the typeface from helvetica to futura as the book is attempting to discuss the contemporary culture of graphic design along with the concept that parts of graphic design remains largely undiscovered and unstudied. I therefore made a link to the movement of discovery that could be fulfilled in the future by using a more updated futuristic font compared to helvetica and the serif font used.

My design shown above used different versions of the typeface Futura such as Futura Medium and Futura Condensed to create a visually stimulating contrast. I also added a box around graphic design in order for it to bring attention to the classification of the book placing this at the top of the page/hierarchy as I felt the classification was important however i made worlds the biggest as I felt this was the most important part of the title as the book focuses on this more specifically. I also drew a line under worlds instead of using a "/" as I felt this worked better than the symbol as it was more visually appealing. I replaced the letter O in worlds to a globe which was slightly modified to fit into the black background although still representative of the letter O.

OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Study Task 2: Book Cover Analysis

OUGD406 - Studio Brief 02 - Study Task 2: Book Cover Analysis

Editorial Coordination/ Book Cover Designer:
Cristina Garbagna

Intended message/Semiotics behind message and how/why they have been used to support the message
and content. How successful the cover is in communicating the message/content.
Are there any counter-arguments, if so how could this be better communicated?

The cover design is relative to the title of the book. The cover effectively communicates the message "words."
due to a change in typeface. However it is very simplistic and brief and doesn't communicate any other messages
other than that of the title of the book and the publisher Electa. The colour scheme used is monotonous and dull
making it extremely uninteresting and stale. The only remotely eye-catching aspect of the cover is the change in
typeface from Sans Serif to a Serif font which enables the reader to understand the concept slightly. However this is
extremely ineffective in communicating the concept and purpose of the book as it does not communicate the meaning
behind the actual book itself. As the book investigates the works and history of the some of the international
contemporary scene's most interesting graphic designers as a prism offering a multifaceted glimpse of the
fields they work in, the interlocking networks behind the scenes and the vital links in today's world. I tried to focus on
what they hadn't incorporated which they needed to when creating my cover.
